International Symposium The Great Peace of Montréal
September 17, 18 and 19, 2026
Organized by the Mohawk Council of Kahnawà:ke, the McCord Stewart Museum, Pointe-à-Callière, and McGill University, the international and multidisciplinary Symposium The Great Peace of Montréal, will take place from September 17 to 19, 2026, in Montréal and Kahnawà:ke. This event brings together cultural, academic and community partners for presentations, discussions and visits.
Presented over two days, it fosters dialogue and sharing knowledge while exploring Indigenous and scholar perspectives. The program includes presentations and discussions with simultaneous interpretation in French and English, as well as visits. A pre-symposium activity day is planned for September 17, at the Kanien’kehá:ka Onkwawén:na Raotitióhkwa Language and Cultural Center.

Costume Balls: The symposium
March 20 and 21, 2025
The McCord Stewart Museum’s specialists, artists and authors share new learning derived from the full spectrum of the process of creating the exhibition Costume Balls: Dressing Up History, 1870-1927, from the slow curatorial process of identification and analysis of the extant garments and visual culture, through the subsequent rethinking of our objectives for conservation interventions, to addressing historical injustices in impersonations of Indigeneity.

Around Wampum: Histories and Perspectives
February 22 and 23, 2024 | International symposium
Capitalizing on the unprecedented interest generated by Wampum: Beads of Diplomacy, the Museum organized a symposium devoted to these unique cultural objects, bringing together a dozen Indigenous, Quebecois, Canadian and international specialists.
