The book Costume Balls: Dressing Up History, 1870-1927 receives award from the Costume Society of America

Press Release

Montreal, June 8, 2026 – The McCord Stewart Museum is pleased to announce that Costume Balls: Dressing Up History, 1870-1927 has received the 2026 Millia Davenport Publication Award from the Costume Society of America. The book was praised by the jury for its depth and level of scholarship, sensitive treatment of challenging topics, the volume and quality of the illustrations, as well as its overall design. The book was previously honoured with a bronze Idéa award in 2025 in the Publishing / Book category for its design, and was shortlisted for the Prix du livre d’art (France) in the Exhibition Catalogue category. It has now become an essential reference for anyone interested in the history and significance of costume balls held in Canada between 1870 and 1927.

Produced to accompany the exhibition of the same name, this ambitious publication is the result of a close collaboration between the Museum team and the creative agency Paprika.

“This distinction recognizes both the scholarly rigor and aesthetic richness of this ambitious project, which shines new light on a little-known page of our social history, as evidenced through our remarkable collections, which preserve this material and visual legacy,” says Anne Eschapasse, President and CEO.

“It is a great honour to see this publication recognized with the prestigious Millia Davenport Publication Award. The Museum has taken great pride in creating this work that makes a significant contribution to dress and fashion studies as well as the social history of late nineteenth-century Canada,” says Cynthia Cooper, curator of the exhibition Costume Balls: Dressing Up History, 1870-1970.

The Millia Davenport Publication Award

About

The Millia Davenport Publication Award recognizes and promotes excellence in the publication of costume, dress, appearance, and fashion related scholarship. The award is given annually to a newly published book or exhibition catalogue that makes a significant contribution to the above studies, reflects original thought and exceptional creativity, and draws on appropriate research methods and techniques.

The Millia Davenport Publication Award, first given in 1991, is named in honor of Millia Davenport (1895-1992), noted costume scholar, theatre designer, and founding member of the Costume Society of America. Her theatre work brought her international acclaim. She established and catalogued the library at the American Museum of Folk Art. Her major published work, The Book of Costume (1948), was a pioneering visual history of Western fashion from ancient civilizations through the late nineteenth century; it remains a standard reference.
