Museum Education in Quebec: New Ways of Sharing and Learning

For more than 100 years, Quebec museums have maintained close educational ties with the school system, with both their forms and purposes continually evolving. From the first school museums to today’s projects designed for a wide range of audiences, this talk will trace the history of museum education in Quebec through key initiatives and educational approaches that have helped shape the field.

Drawing on the work of the Groupe de recherche sur l’éducation et les musées (GREM), Anik Meunier will explore the distinctive features of Quebec’s approach to museum education: a long tradition of partnerships between schools and cultural institutions, teaching practices developed in the field, and models that, since the 1990s, have helped define the relationship between the educational missions of schools and museums.

The talk will be followed by a presentation of concrete examples of educational activities developed and offered by the McCord Stewart Museum for elementary and secondary school groups. The morning will conclude with a guided tour of the Museum’s exhibition and educational spaces.
