Jayce Salloum

location/dis-location(s): beyond the pale

Focusing on the theme What Does the Image Stand For? proposed by guest curator Ami Barak, MOMENTA | Biennale de l’image presents Jayce Salloum – location/dis-location(s): beyond the pale in collaboration with the McCord Museum.

Jayce Salloum has arranged an exacting selection of photographs in the form of thematically structured clusters. These images are extracted from the ‘archive’ that he has been amassing since 1979 — from sites where he has lived, Vancouver, Beirut, New York, as well as other places worked in, such as, Australia, China, Costa Rica, Nicaragua, Panama, Hawaii, Mexico, the Galápagos and the Okanagan Valley in British Columbia. Mixing quotidian collecting with personal and public documents he takes on questions of conflicted territories, states of nature and being, the nation state, social manifestations, and crises of modernity.

Salloum challenges the spectator’s capacity to grasp the many facets of contiguous realities. He positions himself as an anthropologist of the present who analyzes our environment and its representations, observing it as it appears through our daily lives, and in the mediated explosion of surfeit images within contemporary society.
