Urban agriculture: imperative innovation or flavour of the month?

Growing fruit and vegetables in the city is not a recent phenomenon. However, a flourish of citizen initiatives and projects by a new wave of entrepreneurs have restored the legitimacy of urban agriculture. What role does this transformation play in the existing and future identity and urban planning of neighbourhoods and the metropolitan region?
