FIFEQ-MTL

The International Festival of Ethnographic Films of Quebec, City of Montreal (FIFEQ-MTL) was founded in 2003 by visual anthropology students at Université de Montréal. A free and unique festival, it is one of the rare platforms to screen and promote ethnographic cinema in Canada.

Thanks to the generous involvement of hundreds of students from Concordia University, McGill University and Université de Montréal and of non-student professionals, the Festival has brought together thousands of viewers, all passionate about cinema and visual anthropology or simply curious about discovering hidden gems of the ethnographic repertoire.

Program

The Memory of Glitch

Quebec premiere

An exercise in the (de)composition of memory and place. The filmmaker attempts to return through various entryways (montage of found footage, Google Maps explorations, and material recorded during fieldwork) to a ‘lost’ landscape, following a forest fire that hits Oregon.

The Memory of Glitch, 2023, 28 minutes, Netherlands and United States, Suzanne Elizabeth Schaaf. Original version in English.

Baigal Nuur – Lake Baikal

The formation and history of Lake Baikal in Siberia are re-imagined with hand-made animation, featuring the voice of a Buryat woman in her endangered Buryat-Mongolian language. The director Alisi Telengut transports us on a powerful political and artistic journey.

Baigal Nuur – Lake Baikal, 2023, 8 minutes, Canada and Germany, Alisi Telengut. Original version in Mongolian with English subtiles

“We live with maybes”: Searching for missing relatives in post-war Azerbaijan

Canadian premiere

Anthropologist Leyla Jafarova captures the experience of the families of soldiers gone missing during the first war between Armenia and Azerbaijan (1988-1994). Having never been able to find out whether their loved ones are still living or dead. Stuck in a devastating in-between after endless years of futile efforts, the relatives of those gone missing devise and deploy their own strategies to begin to make sense of the past. A rich network of meaning and affect reveals the significance of rituals in the face of death and loss, and its ‘mystical’ place in our lives.

“We live with maybes”: Searching for missing relatives in post-war Azerbaijan, 2023, 65 minutes, Azerbaijan and United States, Leyla Jafarova. Original version in Azerbaijani with English subtitles.
