Cotton – Discussion Workshop
Inspired by a 19th century cotton dress in the Museum’s Dress, Fashion and Textiles collection, Never Was Average invites you to join a conversation about cotton, its history and its industry.
We’re all familiar with cotton—from our clothes to our homes, cotton envelopes our lives. Also known as white gold, this ancient natural fibre is rooted in the foundations of colonial capitalism. As a major commodity in the 19th century world economy, cotton perpetuated the controversial exchange between resource extraction and human exploitation. Today cotton is the face of fast fashion, which leads to the question: How can we imagine a sustainable future for cotton while acknowledging its colonial past? How can we rethink cotton and our relationship to it?
The activity will take place in French and will be followed by a conversation in French and English.
