Exploring Queer Food and the Montreal Restaurant Scene

Paid activity | Space is limited, Reservation required

Join Alex Ketchum, PhD, of McGill University, and panelists Al Dervisevic (he/him), curatorial assistant for A Taste of Queer Montreal: An Exhibition of 2SLGBTQ+ Food and Drink History, and Lauren McGowan (she/they), queer baker and artist based in Tiohtià:ke (Montreal), on April 22, 2026, at 6  p.m. as they discuss queer food at the McCord Stewart Museum.

With the success of the Museum’s current exhibition On the Menu – Montreal: A Restaurant Story, the publication of Queers at the Table: An Illustrated Guide to Queer Food (with Recipes) (2025), and the upcoming Queer Food Conference in Montreal, people are hungry to learn and share on this topic. Alex and guests will discuss: What is queer food? How does queer food show up on the menu? Is there a recipe for queer food? And what makes a cookbook queer? What are the intersections between Montreal’s restaurant history and queer food?

After the presentation and discussion, attendees will have the opportunity to hear a brief introduction to On the Menu – Montreal: A Restaurant Story (available in French and English) and take a self-guided tour of the exhibition.
