The book Costume Balls: Dressing Up History, 1870-1927 receives two honours
Press Release
Montreal, June 25, 2025 – The McCord Stewart Museum is pleased to announce that the publication Costume Balls: Dressing Up History, 1870-1927 was awarded the Bronze Prize for design in the books category at the 6th Idéa awards presented by the A2C and the Société des designers graphiques du Québec (SDGQ). It was also selected as a finalist in the exhibition catalogue category of the prestigious Prix du livre d’art awarded by the city of Ajaccio, on the island of Corsica.
Produced along with the exhibition of the same name, the publication is the happy result of a collaboration between Museum staff and the graphic design agency Paprika. The book itself is a true work of art. It also reflects the Museum’s intention to make its collections and expertise accessible while offering a critical look at the cultural and social practices of the past.
“These honours recognize the scientific rigour and the aesthetics of this ambitious publication, which sheds new light on a little-known chapter of our social history. It will serve as a reference for anyone interested in the history and significance of the costume balls held in Canada between 1870 and 1927,” says Anne Eschapasse, President and CEO.
“It is a great honour to find our catalogue considered for an international award in the distinguished company of these other high-quality publications. The Museum has taken great pride in creating this work as a legacy of an unconventional story that is expressed so well by our collections,” says Cynthia Cooper, curator of the exhibition Costume Balls: Dressing Up History, 1870-1970.

In the epilogue, Caterina Florio, Head, Conservation, describes the challenges involved in treating the impressive group of 40 ensembles featured in the exhibition.
