L’étoile du jour

Off-site, paid activity | Space limited, reservation required

In celebration of Indigenous History Month, the McCord Stewart Museum, in collaboration with Je lis autochtone, invites you to an immersive experience on the mountain with multidisciplinary artist Jocelyn Sioui, as he reads L’étoile du jour.

Stories that we don’t tell disappear, but they don’t vanish without a trace. And then there’s Montreal, Tiohtia:ke, Muliat, the beauty who has always belonged to herself. The island of a thousand peoples, with no borders but the water that surrounds it, full of untold stories, faded histories, and words that haven’t reached us. Not because they weren’t spoken, but because some people, in trying to claim the island, attempted to erase those words entirely. I almost didn’t make it into this world three times. Well, probably a lot more than that, if you think about it, because I’m not counting all the close calls my ancestors had. But I’m certain that my fate was decided in 1535, 1948 and 1962, somewhere near the summit of Mount Royal.

– Jocelyn Sioui

This is a story that looks to the past while staying rooted in the present, and in the land. Jocelyn Sioui shares the story of Wenta’yeh’Tichion (L’étoile du jour), set on the mountain of Tiohtiá:ke (Montreal) island.

Outdoor activity

Meeting at 5:45 p.m. in front of the Café des Amis, at the Beaver Lake Pavilion, for a departure at 6 p.m. on the dot (latecomers won’t be able to join the group). Feel free to bring a blanket or small chair for comfort.

Jocelyn Sioui – Wendat multidisciplinary artist

Jocelyn is a writer, creator and performer whose literary and theatrical works have captivated audiences across Canada and in France. Mononk Jules brings to light the story of Jules Sioui, one of the forgotten pioneers of Indigenous advocacy. Frétillant et Agile is a tale that revives Auhaïtsic, an unlikely Wendat hero. Both works are currently touring Canada.

Hybrid, mixed, laced with humor and imagination, Jocelyn’s work – beneath its deceptively light tone – explores his origins and collective memory, attempting to piece together a hidden history.
