A landmark in the heart of Montreal for over 100 years<\/strong>, the McCord Stewart Museum bears witness to the history of Quebec\u2019s metropolis<\/strong> as well as its influence<\/strong> in Canada and around the world, celebrating the vitality, creativity and diversity of the communities<\/strong> that make it up.<\/span><\/p>\n

The Museum amplifies their voices by interpreting and disseminating the remarkable heritage under its custody: six expansive collections of 3.2 million images, objects, documents and works of art that make it one of North America\u2019s leading<\/strong> museums.\u00a0<\/strong><\/span>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

In keeping with its commitment to decolonization<\/strong> and sustainable development<\/strong>, it creates stimulating\u00a0<\/span>exhibitions<\/a> and educational, cultural and community-engagement activities<\/a> that look at the social history and contemporary issues affecting its audiences through a critical and inclusive lens<\/strong>, inspiring them to take action for a fairer society.<\/p>\n

Montreal to Welcome a New Downtown Museum<\/h2>\n

On April 30, 2019, the McCord Stewart Museum announced that its new museum project will be located in the heart of downtown Montreal<\/a>. It will stand on the current site of the Museum, in addition to integrating Victoria Street, which adjoins the west side of the Museum, and the grounds of the former Le Caveau restaurant on President Kennedy Avenue. By occupying all this area, the Museum will be able to meet its needs for additional space and build a museum that will make its mark on the urban and cultural landscape of Montreal. This project was made possible by close collaboration with the City of Montreal, which ceded the rights to Victoria Street for the construction of the new museum after the completion of a feasibility study around the selection of this site.<\/p>\n

This major project will give Montreal an institution of international calibre that will be a legacy for its residents<\/strong>. At the same time, the Museum announced that it has received a pledge of a $15 million donation from La Fondation Emmanuelle Gattuso, a donation of historic magnitude. In fact this is the largest private financial donation made to a Quebec museum in over thirty years. The completion date of the construction work, which is dependent on funding from the governments of Canada and Quebec, has not yet been determined.<\/p>\n

Indigenization and Decolonization<\/h2>\n

For many years, the Museum has been engaged in a process of indigenization<\/strong> aimed at increasing the relevance and accessibility of the Indigenous Cultures collection<\/a> to Indigenous communities and at ensuring that its scope reflects their concerns and contemporary perspectives.<\/p>\n
