Reading Through Archives: Time of War, Separation and Migration - McCord Museum

Outside the Museum

Reading Through Archives

Students analyze historic sources to discover how Montrealers lived through the Great War. When you reserve this activity, you will receive a teaching guide with a series of three educational activities:

  1. A discussion on the theme of war.
  2. An activity led by a cultural mediator from the Museum that includes a multimedia presentation based on textual archives from the McCord Museum and the City of Montreal.
  3. Suggested activities for further exploring the topic in French, visual arts and drama classes.

The video screened in class offers a dramatized interpretation of period archives. One by one, three Montrealers talk about their personal experiences in relation to the Great War.

The classroom becomes a forum for a rich, stimulating debate about understanding contemporary realities by looking to the past.
